Jane Joyes

Jane, born about 1813, married a Billingshurst carpenter, Peter Wadey, in 1837. She already had a daughter Ellen Joyes born in 1835; but between 1838 and 1853 she had seven more children.

The census returns from 1841 show that the family lived in the small hamlet of Parbrook. As the older children left home Jane supplemented their income by taking in boarders. Her husband died at Parbrook in 1876. He was buried in the Billingshurst churchyard.

In the 1881 census Jane was a visitor at the Surrey home of her son Martin and his wife Harriet. It appears that she died in the area of Aldergate Street, London, but was buried in her home parish of Billingshurst.

Her headstone reads:

Jane Wadey 1891 Dec 13 age 78.

Wife of Peter Wadey. Of London.
